The Brenner is located in one of the most prestigious streets in Munich – directly on Maximilianstraße. But before it became one of the most sought-after addresses in the city, a fundamental question arose: How do you turn a former horse stable of King Ludwig II into a vibrant restaurant that has an impact far beyond Munich?

It would have been obvious to emphasize the history and name the German restaurant "Marstall" to highlight its past as a royal horse stable. But we wanted more than to preserve tradition – we wanted to tell a story that touches people.

The idea was to design the Brenner as a connection between two cultures – inspired by the Brenner Pass, that border which travelers cross when journeying between Germany and Italy. For the Germans, the Brenner symbolizes the anticipation of Italian food, the first espresso, and the Mediterranean lifestyle. For the Italians, it is the gateway to the “northernmost city of Italy,” Munich, where the love for Italian cuisine is deeply rooted. This emotional connection became the conceptual centerpiece of the restaurant. It was intended to be not only a place to eat but a place that unites the best of both worlds: the vibrant atmosphere of a Milanese trattoria with the urban elegance of a New York scene restaurant.

To make this vision tangible, it was essential to make the concept felt not only in the culinary field but also in architecture. The open charcoal grill was deliberately integrated as a central element in the space. Fire should determine the experience – not only as a culinary component but as a visual and emotional highlight. The Brenner should become a place of experience where one feels right in the middle of the action.

The design of the space was crucial: partitions and barriers were removed to create an open, flowing spatial experience. The tables were intentionally arranged so that a subtle social dynamic emerged – one can observe, but does not feel observed. This created an atmosphere that combines the experience of a vibrant marketplace with a certain elegance.
